149 Box, C.J. Dull Knife: A Joe Picket Story
Clarkston, MI and Mission Viejo, CA A.S.A.P. 2005 189201131x Hardcover Fine
Limited edition (#144/200), signed by author, introduction author Ken Bruen, and artist Phil Parks on colophon page. Octavo (22.5 cm), pp. 34. Pictorial upper board, black and white illustrations tipped in throughout. No jacket as issued. Frontispiece photo of author. Box says the inspiration for this story came from an ice-fishing trip he took with his father when he was a kid. A faint glow under the ice at night turned out to be the "dying headlights of a completely submerged car that had crashed through the surface at night and sunk to the bottom. There were no fatalities, and we never learned how the car got there. Joe Pickett, of course, doggedly investigates this eerie accident in this story." The first of three of ASAP's Box limited editions. According to Firsts magazine, "Small press publisher Jim Seels met C.J. Box at the 2003 Bouchercon, where Jim won a silent auction. The prize was having a character named for him in Box’s next book. Jim gave the honor to his wife, Mary—and there she is, in Out of Range. This led to Seels’ series of Box limited editions." This previously-unpublished short story features Box's long-suffering game warden.

This stand-alone story follows Lakota performers from Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show as they navigate the streets and parties and politics of Paris, France. Box at the 2003 Bouchercon, where Jim won a silent auction. The prize was having a character named for him in Box’s next book. Jim gave the honor to his wife, Mary—and there she is, in Out of Range. According to Firsts magazine, "Small press publisher Jim Seels met C.J. Box at the 2003 Bouchercon, where Jim won a silent auction. The prize was having a character named for him in Box’s next book. Boston Houghton Mifflin 1899 Hardcover Very good
Duodecimo (19 cm), pp. 241. Later printing. Brown leather library binding with gilt lettering on spine. Includes frontispiece "Snow Buntings," index. Discard markings from the University of Wyoming library, former owners' names on front and rear endpapers. Burroughs was an American nature writer of extreme popularity in his time. Bill McKibben writes, "If John Muir was the craggy champion of the rugged West, John Burroughs is the lower-key bard of the lower-key, lower-elevation eastern mountains, the patron saint of the weekend cottage in the Berkshires." A contemporary of Thoreau, Whitman, Emerson and Roosevelt, Burroughs waged a campaign against popular but false representations of wildlife. Instead, McKibben writes, "[Burroughs'] quietness works quite powerfully in our over-amplified moment" (American Earth: Environmental Writing Since Thoreau).

198 Butts, Freeman Sketchbook,' 93-'94
Livingston, Montana Freeman Butts 1994 Hardcover Very good
Quarto (27 cm), unpaginated. White cloth boards with writing in black on front: "For Daisy 1994 F.W. Butts 93-94." All recto pages with drawings in black and white of a nude female figure, with blank verso. Markings from drawings slop over onto edges of text block, and cloth and pastedown on rear board. Boards have light staining. Butts and his wife Daisy moved to Livingston, Montana, the year he gave this volume to her. Over the course of his 50 year career, Butts remained primarly inspired by female nudes and landscapes. According to his friend Stephen Gluekert, who penned Butts' biography for his website, "Freeman was unapologetic about the use of the female model, even at a time when there was an outright academic attack on this method of working. When this was brought to his attention, he would laugh and shake his head, appearing absolutely perplexed about a concern he considered absurd. ... Freeman dismissed this argumentative discussion the way he painted, directly and quickly. In his view, he already knew what was important and what was not and after following 50 years of his own practice, he believed he deserved a level of respect for an endeavor without victims."
