419 Geslin, Jules L'Expedition de la Jeannette au Pole Nord racontee par tous les membres de l'expedition ouvrage compose des documents rec us par le New-York Herald de 1878 a 1882
Paris Maurice Dreyfous undated (ca. 1893) First edition Hardcover Good
Octavo (22 cm), pp. [6], xxiv, 365, [2] (vol 1); [6], 411, [1] (vol 2). Undated. First trade edition (there was also an edition of 25 copies printed on Hollande Van Gelder paper). Original publisher's green cloth boards with gilt lettering, maritime vignette in black and gold on upper boards, black border along top and bottom edges. Each with frontispiece, maps and numerous plates. Dedication page tipped in volume 1, reproduced letter/autograph from a Mr. Jackson of the New York Herald (both of which are dated December 1892, leading to likely publication date of 1893). Both volumes with foxing, and moderate wear along edges. Some unopened pages. A compendium of reports from the New York Herald translated into French, regarding the Arctic voyage of the USS Jeannette. The Herald's owner, James Gordon Bennett Jr., was enamoured with the "Open Polar Sea" theory which held that the warm waters of the Gulf Stream flowed north to melt a "thermometric gateway" to the North Pole (Howgego, D4). He owned the Jeannette and sent the ship (under naval command) off to look for an overdue Swedish ship in 1879. The journey was by any measure an unmitigated disaster. Within a few months, the Jeannette got stuck in an ice pack. The crew continued to record scientific data and actually discovered two new islands before having to abandon ship in June 12, 1881, when the weight of the ice crushed the ship. The crew was forced to hike down the Siberian coast, and many members (including Captain George DeLong) died there. First Edition.

440 Grieger, Scott Mainstream Art
Los Angeles Scott Grieger 1972 First Edition Other Near fine
Quarto (28.5cm), pp. [8]. A set of eight loose, black and white prints in a brown portfolio with black titling. Includes photographic and collage work with titles including "Bovine Esthetic," "Richard Serra/Stew," "Robert Morris Machine Gun Nest" and the title piece. Folio has a little creasing and edge wear, prints are fine. Grieger says that early in his career, he self-published a few of these folios. "The strategy was: being an unknown artist I figured I could get around the constraints of that position by sending my artwork directly to people I wanted to see what I was doing. I got a lot of names and addresses and simply sent them my art. It worked beautifully and within a few months I was traveling to New York and other centers having shows, talks etc. Big fun." Grieger was friends with Montana painter Freeman Butts, and this folio is from Butts' collection. A writer in Art Week L.A. said of Grieger that, "[M]uch of the power of his work derives from the essential dynamic of how satire operates – through the transformation of known forms into configurations that yet remain recognizable enough to provide content and context for the author’s new intentions and original insights..."
