Manuscripts: American Indians in Linguistics; A Note on a Walbiri Tradition of Antonymy; Toward a Papago Grammar [with Albert Alvarez], Hale, Kenneth
1 Hale, Kenneth Manuscripts: American Indians in Linguistics; A Note on a Walbiri Tradition of Antonymy; Toward a Papago Grammar [with Albert Alvarez]
Paperback Very good
Ditto copies of three typwritten manuscripts, pp. 13, 22, and 34. Each stapled in upper left corner, with tell-tale purple ink; each with references. Some dog-eared pages. Hale was a linguist with an endowed chair at MIT, who studied endangered and previously unknown languages. He advanced the theory that some languages were non-configuational, cohering around "clusters" rather than the familiar structure of languages like English. He recruited native speakers as students, so they could help study their own language. (Wikipedia) American Indians in Linguistics was later published in Indian History journal (1969); A Note on a Walbiri Tradition was included in a 1971 book titled, Semantics: An Interdisciplinary Reader in Philosophy, Linguistics and Psychology; and the piece on Papago grammer was published in the International Journal of American Linguistics (1970). These come from the collection of a Tucson woman who was childhood friends with Hale, who she says was a good bull rider, and spoke 50 languages.
