Octavo (24 cm), pp. 212. Brown wrappers with black lettering and "Navajo Indian Mission" logo. String binding, deckle edge. Scarce first edition, unnumbered copy from a limited edition of 325 copies. Translations of Navajo into English. Wrappers have come off book completely are in two pieces. Binding is intact though frail. Pages are clean. The dictionary is credited to the three Franciscan friars who moved to establish the St. Michael's mission in 1898, and offered visitors food and coffee in exchange for the names of objects in Navajo, though authorship is generally attributed to Father Bernard Haile. This is a book that was not supposed to exist: Navajo code talkers were used during World War II based in part on the premise that the language was only spoken, not written. First Edition.
