Twenty color plates by Kilbourne in sleeve, accompanied by ichthyologist Goode's monograph on fish habits and distribution, which includes black and white illustrations and a "Provisional Map Showing a Geographical Distribution of Game Fishes of Eastern North America" drawn from Goode's sketches and dated 1881.First plate (Atlantic Salmon) has light foxing and wear along top edge, other plates are immaculate. Boards have light wear at head/tail of spine, and rear hinge is loose.Kilbourne, who was trained as a landscape painter and took up fish art in the late 1850s, completed these watercolor paintings just before he died in 1881. Goode served as head of the fish research programs of the US Fish Commission and the Smithsonian, the US Commissioner for Fish and Fisheries, and was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Science. This collaboration between the two is considered a monumental work in sporting literature of the 19th century.
