Box says the inspiration for this story came from an ice-fishing trip he took with his father when he was a kid. A faint glow under the ice at night turned out to be the "dying headlights of a completely submerged car that had crashed through the surface at night and sunk to the bottom. There were no fatalities, and we never learned how the car got there. Joe Pickett, of course, doggedly investigates this eerie accident in this story."The first of three of ASAP's Box limited editions. According to Firsts magazine, "Small press publisher Jim Seels met C.J. Box at the 2003 Bouchercon, where Jim won a silent auction. The prize was having a character named for him in Box’s next book. Jim gave the honor to his wife, Mary—and there she is, in Out of Range. This led to Seels’ series of Box limited editions." This previously-unpublished short story features Box's long-suffering game warden.
